We were created to be in a relationship with God but sin has torn us away from that perfect union. The Bible says that, "We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Jesus died to restore what was broken and to heal the division between you and God. God the Father, sent His only Son to die for you and me - and to give us peace with God and eternal life!
How can you know God?
Realize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. We are all born into sin, no one taught a child how to lie. Our natural state is in rebellion to God. But He has put a longing in us to fully know Him. Not one of us can ever be good enough to restore our relationship with God and earn our way into heaven. We cannot clean ourselves up or do good things to replace the bad. God does not weigh our good deeds against our bad deeds and let that determine where we will spend eternity. He demands perfection! Since no one is perfect, and God can not let sin into heaven - what do we do?
Recognize that Jesus died for YOU on that cross. The penalty for sin is death and eternal separation from God. God cannot just sweep our sin under the carpet - because He is fair and just. The ONLY acceptable sacrifice is to place the sins of the world on a person who has never sinned. Jesus is perfect and lived the perfect life that none of us can. Jesus willingly went to the cross and died an excruciating death - to take our punishment. The Bible tells us, "God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." This is the Gospel, the "Good News!"
Repent of your sin and go the other way. The word repent just means to change your mind - your direction. Instead of running away from God, we now can run to Him. It's a pivotal point in our lives when we decide that our way is no longer working. God is faithful to forgive every sin, we just agree that we need His grace and forgiveness in our lives. Grace means "undeserved favor" which tells you that you can't earn forgiveness - it is given from God. Scripture says, "God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God." This doesn't not mean that we will stop sinning - even as a Believer. We won't be sinless - but over time we will sin less. Jesus paid the price for all of your sins, past, present - and future. When you put your faith and trust in Christ to save you, then the Holy Spirit will teach you how to turn away from sin. This is a decision that you alone will make.
Receive Jesus Christ into your life. Becoming a Christian is not joining a church or changing your behavior. It is having The Holy Spirit take up residence inside of you. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in." Just find a quiet place and talk to Him. He tells us that we need to come to Him with "child-like" faith. Let down your guard and tell Jesus that you have sinned. That you want a real relationship with Him and know you can't save yourself. Ask Jesus to save you, and He is faithful to make you a child of God. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" 2 Corinthians 5:17
